Beardsley Hall, Swarthmore College
Swarthmore College asked CuetoKEARNEYdesign to renovate the top floor of historic Beardsley Hall. The Art History Department had long been teaching and displaying work in inadequate spaces. Although the major part of the tight budget was allocated to updating the HVAC system, CKd was able to carefully utilize modest materials to create state of the art seminar rooms and temporary display space in the hallway. The seminar rooms feature floor to ceiling chalk boards, framed fixed projector screens and a fieze of art-related quotes selected by the art faculty. Happy professors began teaching in the new accommodations in fall of 2005.
“I’ve been here for 27 years, and this is the first time that I’ve taught in a classroom designed specifically for the subject I teach,” he said. “We’re all very excited.” - Michael Cothren, Swarthmore College Professor
“I think the third floor of Beardsley looks great. It’s so bright, and the tiling on the floor is pretty sharp. The burnt orange accent chairs in one of the classrooms are such a nice touch. It’s wonderful to have facilities that feel ‘real’ — the way they do in Kohlberg, Trotter and the Science Center — but I’m glad that there’s a flair of fun, too.” - Laura Holzman, Swarthmore Student '06
