Jennifer Baker
After Swarthmore artist Jennifer Baker was short-listed for the SEPTA ART IN TRANSIT project at the newly opened 46th Street Market El Station, she contacted CuetoKEARNEYdesign for assistance with the technical and presentation requirements of the project. CKd assembled a project team that included Electro-Mechanical Systems (www.emsmechanical.com), Crescent Iron Works (www.crescentironworks.com)and Wommack Studios (www.wommackstudios.com) for technical advice and pricing and assisted Jennifer with advice, a scale model and presentation drawings of the developed scheme.
From Jennifer’s proposal:
“West Philly Dances is a frieze of dancing figures, hand painted with the details, features and colorful costumes of the dancers, all cut from ¼-inch aluminum plate and curved to echo the curve of the 50 foot long wall. The figures are mounted on a visible framework that follows the wall and is suspended from the ceiling structure, which will easily support the weight. Each of the eight dancers is between six and 14 feet tall, approximately twice life size, and each is based on sketches done from life at dance rehearsals and performances throughout the spring. Captured in mid-dance, these figures represent the great variety of dance groups in the surrounding neighborhood, and SEPTA passengers will relate to and appreciate the appealing and recognizable images whether or not they know the specific dance groups.”
