Widener Residence Hall
Metropolitan Hall
Widener University
Chester, PA
CuetoKEARNEYdesign with WRT Architects, 2005-6
CuetoKEARNEYdesign in association with Wallace Roberts and Todd was the winner of an invited competition for this 90,000 square foot, 300 bed suite based residence hall at WidenerUniversity’s main campus in Chester Pennsylvania. The $19,000,000 project was completed on a fast track schedule, just 19 months from competition to completion, and meets requirements for LEED certification (pending). The design takes into account new campus circulation to create a quadrangle that responds to overall campus needs while respecting the privacy of the residents. The building features a variety of suite types, light filled circulation areas, referential brick patterning, and a multi-story glass lounge space that, along with an adjacent limestone wall, marks the corner entry into the main campus. Special features include a zinc clad ‘clubhouse’ in the courtyard that helps define the new quad and contains living spaces above a high-tech classroom and support spaces. CKd was also able to seamlessly integrate the campus health center into the building with its own entry and identity. The project was opened on time and on budget in August of 2006.
I am really pleased with the way the finished Metropolitan Hall sits on the site as well as its design. It is everything we hoped for.
